ICYMI: Senate Democratic Leaders Discuss Priorities For The General Election

RICHMOND, VA –  Following Tuesday’s primary elections, Virginia Senate Democratic leaders held a press call to discuss top priorities for the general election and the road ahead to protect and expand their majority in the Senate. All 140 seats in the General Assembly are up for reelection this year, and Virginia’s races will be some of the most competitive elections in the country.

A recording of remarks is available here and see below for key highlights:

“As we look toward November, the stakes for Virginians in this year’s elections are crystal clear: our Senate majority has been the one thing standing between Virginians and the Republicans’ extreme agenda. Senate Democrats have prevented Republicans in Richmond from banning abortion, making it harder to vote, rolling back gun safety laws, and more. This year’s elections are about whether Republicans will have the power to enact dangerous policies, or whether Virginians will stand up and vote to stop them,” said Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke.

“If there’s one thing that last night made clear, it’s that abortion rights are a top issue for Virginia voters. As residents of the only state in the South that has not passed an abortion ban following the Dobbs decision, Virginians want their freedom to make their own health care decisions to be protected…On top of our current members, we also have an excellent slate of candidates running in new districts to expand our Democratic majority. In the districts where Democrats have the best chances to pick up seats, we nominated the strongest possible candidate,” said Senate Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Scott Surovell.

“These priorities – growing our economy, protecting our freedoms, investing in public education, and fostering safe and healthy communities – should not be partisan…That’s what Virginians, we believe, want us to focus on in Richmond, and that’s what we’re going to focus on this election season. Senate Democrats have the track record of delivering for our constituents and solving some of the toughest problems in the commonwealth. And it’s that track record that will help us protect and expand our majority in November,” said Senator Jennifer Boysko.
