New Emerson College poll of Virginia finds:
- “52% of Virginia voters support Vice President Kamala Harris for president in 2024, while 44% support former president Donald Trump. Three percent are undecided, and one percent support someone else.”
- “Incumbent Democratic Senator Tim Kaine leads Republican opponent Hung Cao by ten points, 51% to 41%, with 6% undecided. “
- “Underlying demographic shifts in party affiliation and gender are driving the changes in the toplines — in July, independents broke 46% to 38% for Trump, now they break 52% to 38% for Harris. One of the most significant shifts occurred among women voters — they broke by six points for Biden over Trump in July (47% to 41%), and now break by 20 points for Harris, 58% to 38%.”
- “Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin holds a 44% job approval rating, while 34% disapprove of the job he is doing as Governor.”
- On that last point, about Youngkin’s approval rating, a comparison to previous Virginia governors isn’t flattering for Youngkin. For instance, CNU’s September 24, 2020 poll had then-Governor Ralph Northam at 53%-41% (+12) approval. Today’s Emerson College poll has Youngkin at 44%-34% (+10). Overall, Youngkin’s net approval rating has been lower than pretty much any previous Virginia governor (see graphic, below)…for instance, Northam was as high as +35 points (in December 2018), then – other than a few months when his “Blackface” scandal hit – was around +14 to +16 points net approval. As for Tim Kaine, Mark Warner and Bob McDonnell, they all had FAR higher net approval ratings than Youngkin. Also note that most governors have high approval ratings – nothing unusual at all. So when Youngkin’s people and his useful idiots in the media tout his supposedly high approval ratings, they are mostly just blowing smoke…
