Per reporter Brandon Jarvis/Virginia Scope, it sounds like we’ll be getting new 10D-1R U.S. House maps for Virginia (up from 6D-5R now) later today or early tomorrow. For now, here’s where we’re at:
- “General Assembly Democrats have reached an agreement on a 10-1 map. ‘We are proud to deliver a map that delivers for democracy'”; “Speaker Don Scott and Sen. Louise Lucas says we will see the maps either by the end of the day or first thing tomorrow morning.”; “Sen. Lucas says the maps are competitive, ‘if you get out and work you can win it,”’ and continues saying they are not coronating Democrats. Lucas says they gave no consideration to anyone when drawing districts, not even incumbents” – Scoop by Brandon Jarvis
- “Virginia Dems appear to be in agreement on a 10-1 map, or ‘peace in the valley’ in General Assembly speak; The proposed map should be out within next 24 hours; This could result in a net pick up of 4 House seats during the midterms” – Sam Shirazi
By the way, a 10D-1R map would mean that the only Republican left standing would be Rep. Morgan Griffith, who (mis)represents one of the reddest districts in America, VA09 in SW Virginia. It also would mean likely defeat for: Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA01), Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA02), Rep. John McGuire (R-VA05) and Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA06). Of course, we’ll have to see the exact map to know the details of these districts, including whether or not these rumors were accurate (e.g., will there be districts drawn for Del. Dan Helmer and/or State Senator Russet Perry and/or State Senator Lamont Bagby to run in? Will Tom Perriello be put into a district with Shannon Taylor? What exactly will VA06 look like, and will it end up being Beth Macy vs. Wendy Gooditis or something else? Lots more questions…which hopefully will be answered in the next 24 hours, so stay tuned!
