Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s comments earlier today say so much about where we’re at as a country. Check out the video, below, in which she says:
Question: “…Senator Sturtevant [R] inside. He was concerned that if you took an aggressive approach on what the president says, it could hurt Virginia’s relationship with the federal government. Are you concerned about that?”
Gov. Spanberger: “Well, I think it’s unfortunate that anyone would have a relatively reasonable fear of a punitive president punishing…a state or a community because someone called out what might be lies or things they say that are untrue. So, you know, the fact that Senator Sturtevant said that there could be potentially ramifications of me speaking truth about the president’s speech, I don’t think he’s potentially wrong, but I will not be afraid. And I would hope that the people of Virginia are not afraid of a president who would punish the people of Virginia because their governor disagrees with the president. I think it’s actually deeply problematic that we’ve come to a place where we accept that we should be in fear of a president who says things that are…anything from outright lies to twistings of the truth. And I think that the fact that we’ve almost come to a place where we accept his punitive nature as normal is, in and of itself, a great signal of I think a distressing reality that we’re facing.”
Trump’s State of the Union Address Will Be Full of Lies and Promises to Virginians He Won’t Keep
During Trump’s first year in office, costs and unemployment rates have risen for Virginia families, and health care has become even more expensive
RICHMOND, VA – Tonight, Donald Trump will give his State of the Union address. However he tries to spin his failed economy, Virginians won’t be fooled — they know Trump will make promises he does not intend to keep and try to deflect from just how disastrous his first year in office has been for working families across Virginia.
Trump has spent the past 13 months enriching himself and his circle of billionaire elites, while his failed economic agenda skyrockets costs for working families and destroys good-paying jobs in Virginia. To make matters worse, Trump and Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill kicked 350,000 Virginians off their health care coverage and took food off the table of 447,000 Virginians.
By nearly every metric, Trump’s first year has been a complete disaster for Virginia, and Virginians know that year two could be even worse. Virginians will have the opportunity to hold Trump and his Republican enablers accountable in November.
Ahead of Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address, Virginia Democratic Party Chair Senator Lamont Bagby released the following statement:
“Tonight, Donald Trump will desperately try to pull the wool over Virginians eyes and paper over a year’s worth of betrayal and disastrous policies. But Virginians won’t fall for it. Trump promised to lower costs on ‘Day One,’ But prices are skyrocketing. Trump promised to usher in an economic ‘golden age’ for Virginians, but our job market is dismal, jobs are drying up, and Virginia’s economy is in the gutter. Trump promised a “golden age’ – instead we have the weakest economic growth in years and companies are announcing layoffs every day. As Trump makes more promises he does not plan to keep while pushing an agenda that is raising costs for working families, Democrats will be fighting to lower Virginains costs, create jobs, and protect health care.”
