Add this to the long list of things I didn’t know about my elected officials. It turns out, Mark Warner’s father (pictured above near the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington) fought as a U.S. Marine in the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II, and recently returned there for the 66th anniversary (the battle was in February-March 1945). Thank you to Mark Warner’s father for his service, and thank you to everyone he served with for fighting fascism and tyranny and for defending America. For more on the Battle of Iwo Jima, check out this site by the Defense Department.
