Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Saturday, March 3.
- Canada ‘flabbergasted’ by Trump’s tariff proposals (“It was unclear which countries would be subject to the steel and aluminum tariffs, but Canada is the largest exporter of those goods to the United States. The foreign minister threatened retaliatory measures if Canada isn’t exempted.”)
- Trump trade tariffs: Europe threatens US bikes, bourbon and bluejeans (“IMF joins China in warning of potential harm from 25% tariff imposed on metal imports but Trump insists ‘trade wars are good’”)
- Officials try to contain damage from Trump trade war declaration (“The announcement spooked investors, enraged allies and left pro-trade White House officials scrambling to change the president’s mind.”)
- Demoralized West Wing stokes fears over Trump’s capacity to handle a crisis (“The president has embraced chaos since the beginning, but the past week’s drama has left staffers dangerously depleted.”)
- Sinclair definitely doesn’t want anyone to think that Trump’s White House is in a state of crisis (If you live in Virginia or the DC metro area, do NOT watch Sinclair propaganda/”news” on WSET-TV in Lynchburg/Roanoke, WTVZ-TV in Hampton Roads, WRLH-TV in Richmond, or WJLA-TV in Northern Virginia/DC.)
- Ex-CIA chief: Trump ‘unstable, inept, inexperienced, and also unethical’ (Correct, so why does anyone still support him?)
- Days before the election, Stormy Daniels threatened to cancel deal to keep alleged affair with Trump secret
- Trump’s advisers are gluttons for punishment (“The second-tier advisers of this administration run for the exits or stay and suffer.”)
- Trump was angry and ‘unglued’ when he started a trade war, officials say (That’s damaging enough; imagine if Trump is “unglued” and starts a REAL war?)
- A Week of Policy Surprises Leaves Even Trump’s Supporters Confused (In fairness, it doesn’t take much to confuse those people)
- Mueller team asking if Kushner foreign business ties influenced Trump policy
- Trade Wars Are Destructive. Of Course Trump Wants One. (Tariffs are also a TAX; so yet again, Republicans violate another core conservative “principle”)
- Trump’s Tariffs Stoke Fears That Trade War Will ‘Kill’ U.S. Jobs (Not THAT will be “American carnage!”)
- Will Trump Really Start a Broad Trade War? (If he does, there goes the economy!)
- Old Pruitt recordings show him doubting evolution (Pruitt is completely deranged.)
- Trump confidant dumped millions in steel-related stock last week (“Carl Icahn has impeccable timing.” Sure sounds like insider trading.)
- Can Gun-Control Advocates Make the NRA Toxic? (“The fight over firearms is fast becoming a test case for the potential, and limits, of stigma in U.S. politics.”)
- Commerce secretary says it is ‘no big deal’ that Trump’s tariffs will add $175 to price of car (“Billionaire Wilbur Ross used a tin of Campbell’s soup and a can of Budweiser to suggest Trump’s tariff plan would have minimum impact”)
- Mike Huckabee resigns from country music charity over anti-LGBTQ beliefs (“He claims ‘hate wins,’ but the opposite just happened.”)
- Will the Last Person to Leave the West Wing Please Turn Out the Lights?
- A new, huge review of gun research has bad news for the NRA (“The findings, while limited, point in one direction: Gun control can save lives.” Wait, you mean it’s not about prayer or the “welfare state” or abortion or whatever other crazy shit Virginia House Republicans – Todd Gilbert, Nick Freitas, Thomas Wright, etc. – are spewing out these days?)
- Electrolux puts $250 million US investment on hold over Trump’s tariff hike
- Trump Is Coming Apart as the World Comes Apart Around Him (“This is not a good situation for anyone because he’s liable at this point to do anything. This thing is a runaway train. There is no way to stop it. This week has been different.”)
- Businesses Duck And Cover As Trump Says Trade War Is ‘Easy To Win’
- Trump’s Pro-Business Agenda Takes a Hit (“The market shock that has followed President Trump’s announcement of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports is exacerbated by what the move symbolizes for his agenda and the broader global economy”)
- Republican Thomas Oh Will Challenge Don Beyer In VA-8 (Yeah, good luck with that – LOL!)
- Editorial: The General Assembly rides to the rescue of … country clubs? (“Never let it be said that members of the General Assembly do not defend the interests of the downtrodden. While they might not be willing to expand Medicaid, at least they’re looking out for country clubs.” This is the conservative RTD editorial board, by the way.)
- Sen. Frank Wagner pushes former Sen. John Watkins for SCC judge (“Should Watkins become an SCC commissioner, he would be in charge of helping regulate the entity that was his top campaign donor when he was a lawmaker – Dominion Energy.” Absolutely unacceptable.)
- Northam threatens (nicely) to use amendment to muscle in Medicaid (I don’t understand why the LG can vote on budge AMENDMENTS even though he can’t vote on the budget.
What’s the deal with that?) - A Fresh Start for Clean Energy in Virginia (Believe it or not, this is written by someone who works at NRDC, not at Dominion Energy. WTF?)
- Virginia lawmakers send utility rate overhaul bill to governor’s desk (Ugh…)
- Virginia, Maryland governors declare state of emergency over severe winds
- Tensions flare in Virginia House over gun debate (As usual, Blue Virginia’s coverage is better, with video of the speeches for instance…)
- Bryan K. Stephens: Road, bridge projects depend on gas taxes (“AN EFFICIENT transportation system that meets the needs of business is key to a strong regional economy. Fortunately, in Hampton Roads we have observed firsthand the beginning of a successful regional effort to advance many of our region’s strategic transportation projects.”)
