Washington, DC – Congressman Jim Moran, Northern Virginia Democrat, applauded the repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy. Since enacted in 1993, the policy forced more than 13,000 gay and lesbian service men and women to be discharged from military service.

“No longer will we subject the brave men and women who volunteer to serve our nation to a shameful vow of silence, asking them to lie about who they really are,” said Moran. “‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ was wrong, it was un-American, and now it is history. Our nation and military are stronger as a result. I was proud to stand with members of Congress last year to vote down this wasteful, harmful policy.”

Moran continued: “Institutionalized discrimination compromises the integrity of the entire military establishment and the flag under which it serves. By repealing this policy, our nation takes an important step forward. To all who serve our nation at home and abroad, we are so proud of each and every one of you.”

To coincide with today’s repeal of the discriminatory policy, Congressman Moran submitted a video to the ‘It Gets Better’ Project (http://www.itgetsbetter.org/video/entry/6698/) to give a message of hope to young adults. The project was founded in 2010 in response to a series of tragic suicides by LGBT youth who were bullied because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The project serves as a resource for LBGT youth to see how love and happiness can be a reality in their future and for supporters to share words of hope and empowerment.
