So, at this point (6/18), in Virginia we’re at 56,238 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 5,744 hospitalizations and 1,586 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 463 (+0.8%) in the latest statistics, which is the same rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 444 (+0.8%) . The number of TOTAL test results was 555,462 (up 8,777 from 546,685 yesterday), while the number of “PCR Only” tests was 499,599 (up 7,715 from 491,884 yesterday). These testing numbers are below 10,000 per day (a number Gov. Northam has repeatedly stated as an important goal), and still far below the 16,664 per day that Harvard’s Global Health Institute estimates we need to reopen safely and contain the virus. As for hospitalizations, they went up 52 (+0.9%), from 5,692 to 5,744, which is the same rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 49 (+0.9%). Deaths are reported up 3 (from 1,583 to 1,586), compared to an increase of 13 (from 1,570 to 1,583) the previous day – and the lowest increase in deaths since April 6.
