EBBIN STATEMENT ON RESIGNATION OF SENATOR PHIL PUCKETT

Voices concerns about resignation's effect on Medicaid Expansion, calls for Attorney General Investigation

Alexandria, VA - Senator Adam Ebbin  - candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 8th Congressional District - today issued the following statement to address the abrupt resignation of Senator Phil Puckett.

"Like many of my constituents, I was outraged to learn of Senator Phil Puckett's sudden resignation. Since the beginning of this session, Senator Puckett had repeatedly assured me and other Senate Democrats that he intended to stay in office. This turn of events is a betrayal of that promise. Worse, 400,000 Virginians may now be denied access to expanded Medicaid coverage, including many who live in Senator Puckett's former district.

I remain committed to full implementation and expansion of the Affordable Care Act, including Medicaid expansion in Virginia. In 2012, I passed a law to provide Medicaid coverage to immigrant expectant mothers. I will support Governor McAuliffe as the fight for affordable access to health care for all Virginia families continues.

Even more troubling were early allegations that Senator Puckett took this action based on the promise of a high-paying position on a government commission. I have reached out to Attorney General Mark Herring to voice my concerns about this situation and to encourage a thorough investigation."

Adam Ebbin Stands with Attorney General Mark Herring

Herring issues opinion that students with deferred action status qualify for in-state tuition.

Alexandria, Va. - Senator Adam Ebbin - a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 8th Congressional District - today stood with Attorney General Mark Herring (D) in support of students with different action status qualifying for in-state tuition.

"I stand with Attorney General Herring in his recognition that DACA students are Virginia residents who qualify for in-state tuition. Today, Virginia finally has an Attorney General who is fighting for those students who have so much to contribute to our community and economy," stated Ebbin. "For too long, these students have had to hide in the shadows for fear of deportation and discrimination. These students are children of Virginia and it is our civic responsibility to empower them to succeed in the future.   Not only does this position make economic sense, but more importantly, it is the morally right thing to do."

Ebbin has introduced legislation to ensure that students with Differed Action for Childhood Arrival Status would qualify for in-state tuition for Virginia colleges and universities. In 2004 Ebbin also introduced a Virginia Dream Act.

Michel Zajur, president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, had previously said that "The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce applauds Senator Ebbin's persistent efforts over the past decade to help the immigrant community achieve their fair share of the American Dream. Senator Ebbin understands that this is the right thing to do, not only because these children deserve fair treatment, but for Virginia's economic success."

ADAM EBBIN RECEIVES ENDORSEMENT FROM NATIONAL AND STATE DRUG REFORM GROUPS

0
Alexandria, Va - Senator Adam Ebbin - candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 8th Congressional District - today received the endorsement of the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws and its state affiliate, Virginia NORML.

"NORML PAC believes strongly that Senator Ebbin has the tenacity, coalition building skills, and political acumen required to help end our country's destructive prohibition of marijuana," stated NORML PAC Manager Erik Altieri. "Outgoing Congressman Jim Moran has a long history of supporting important marijuana law reform proposals at the federal level, and Adam Ebbin is a proven and effective leader who will carry on that important legacy and move us further in rolling back the damage marijuana prohibition is having on families and communities across the nation."

"I have a record of supporting decriminalization and, like President Obama, do not believe that the effects of marijuana are more harmful than alcohol," Senator Ebbin said. "For more than a decade, I've been fighting for progressive causes in the General Assembly. In Virginia, marijuana related arrests make up over 50% of all drug related arrests, costing the state over $67 million.  We must focus our time and resources on job creation, clean energy, healthcare, education, and our economy. I look forward to continuing my work for our shared progressive values as the next member of Congress from the 8th District."

"Virginia NORML realizes that any federal cannabis policy reform will act as a powerful catalyst for changing our state laws," commented Virginia NORML Communications Director Duane Ludwig, "We are excited to endorse Adam Ebbin for Congress because he will be a bold, progressive advocate for fair and reasonable cannabis policy."

In Virginia, more than 4 out of 5 residents support the legalization of medical marijuana, and a majority support decriminalization. A recent poll revealed that in Northern Virginia, where the 8th Congressional District is located, over 50% of residents support fully legalizing and regulating marijuana. Senator Ebbin currently represents 36% of voters most likely to vote in the Virginia 8th Democratic primary and is strongly positioned to win in the June 10th Democratic primary.

Local Democratic officials are also uniting behind Ebbin's candidacy. He has won the endorsements of former state Senator Patsy Ticer (D-Alexandria), Delegate Mark Sickles (D-Fairfax) and state Senators Dave Marsden (D-Fairfax), and Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax).
