• Senator Janet Howell Ridicules Anti-Choice Bill Poised to Pass Today

On Monday, Senator Janet Howell proposed an amending Senate Bill 484, which requires women to be subjected to an ultrasound before having an abortion, to also include mandatory cardiac and rectal exams for men seeking a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication

    […]

“We need some gender equity here,” said Sen. Howell. “The Virginia senate is about to pass a bill that will require a woman to have totally unnecessary medical procedure at their cost and inconvenience. If we’re going to do that to women, why not do that to men?”

Sen. Howell’s amendment narrowly failed, 21-19. Senate Bill 484 is expected to pass the General Assembly today.

The Senator’s office has been inundated with positive responses from people from all over the country. “We have received hundreds of emails and phone calls, all very supportive-I even got a call from a state representative in Alaska,” said Sen. Howell.

“Sometimes satire is the most powerful weapon we have against those who want to limit a woman’s right to choose,” added Sen. Howell. “If conservatives insist on putting government regulation in between a woman and her doctor, I want to take a stand.”

I understand the point Senator Howell is trying to make here.  However, I think this kind of silly stunt goes a long way in portraying Senator Howell and our State Government as being just as inept as our Congress. I’m really tired of the Republicans using jobs and the economy to get elected, and then, of course, arriving in the GA and Congress to do nothing but push their social agenda.  I don’t believe offering amendments like this one does anything to stop the Republicans and actually believe it re-inforces the feeling of exasperation many have with our government.

thing has gone viral on many national blogs. I think it is hysterical. Good for her.

I love it. Just shows the hypocrisy in a big way.

  • Sen. McEachin rips Republicans for forcing women to undergo – and pay for, presumably – medical procedures mandated (emphasis on that word) by the government, for purely political reasons. Utter hypocrisy by Republicans, of course, but what else is new with those people?

Senate Bill 484 passed this afternoon, forcing women to have medically unnecessary ultrasounds prior to an abortion. Once again, the Republicans disrespect families and women and don’t trust them with their own most personal decisions. This very personal decision should be between a woman, her doctor and her faith advisor, if she chooses.

    Senate Approves Measure Mandating Ultrasounds

Senators forcing women to undergo unnecessary medical procedure

Today, the Virginia State Senate approved SB 484 (Vogel, R-Fauquier) by a 21-19 vote. SB 484 is a measure that would require women to undergo an ultrasound 24 hours before having an abortion.

“Senate Bill 484 represents an unprecedented invasion of the examining room in our Commonwealth. This bill clearly interferes with the doctor-patient relationship,” said Tarina Keene, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. She continued, “Women should have the option of having an ultrasound, not forced to undergo an unnecessary procedure prescribed by politicians.”

“The Legislature’s time and efforts would be better spent on measures that will improve the health and lives of all women in Virginia.  Women need access to family planning — not government intrusion into personal, private decisions,” said Keene.

I know that the bill was carried over a day so that Sen. Northam, a physician, could offer an amendment intended to make the sonogram and fetal heartbeat optional. According to Richmond Sunlight’s posting of the bill, the requirement IS optional:

“Except in the case of a medical emergency, before the performance of an abortion a qualified medical professional trained in sonography and working under the direct supervision of a physician licensed in the Commonwealth shall offer to perform fetal ultrasound imaging and auscultation of fetal heart tone services on the patient undergoing the abortion for the purpose of determining gestational age.”

But…potomac local.com says,”A bill requiring a woman to get an ultrasound before having an abortion has cleared a crucial committee and been sent to the Senate floor for a vote next week.”

Confusing. Offer to perform isn’t requiring anything. Notwithstanding that, everyone should read SB 484 as passed just to see all the hoops that a woman is required to jump through to receive reproductive medical attention. And, the state already has forced all providers of abortions to practice in offices that meet surgical standards. This is killing Roe v Wade one stab at a time.
