Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Saturday, July 2. Also check out President Obama’s weekly address, in which he “wished everyone a happy Fourth of July, and recognized our service members, veterans and their families for their service to our country.”

Looks like Virginia Dems will shortly have two announced candidates for LG in 2017 – Justin Fairfax and Gene Rossi.

My Beloved Colleagues, Loyal Opponents, and Friends:

On June 12, 1989—the happiest day of my professional life—I took an oath and promised to work what seemed then like four long years for the Tax Division of the U.S. Justice Department. I did not expect to spend one day more than those four pledged years. Get some experience, try a few cases, and then move on. However, I simply fell head over heels for Lady Justice and her mission. I had my dream job. And never thought I would ever leave Her embrace.

Today, after twenty-seven years with the Justice Family (including nineteen glorious years in the Eastern District of Virginia as an Assistant U.S. Attorney), I am retiring. With countless war wounds from more than a “few” trials (110), I spoke words in court today for the last time that have never ceased to inspire me: “Gene Rossi for the United States.” I will cherish forever that brief introduction and the solemn duty that went with it. However, now is the time for me to move on to another chapter in my life. But I will always love you all–whether you were inside or outside my Family as a dear colleague or loyal opponent.

I will soon pursue another dream–one I have had since I cast my first vote. I am leaving the courtroom to enter what a hero of mine (President Teddy Roosevelt) called “the arena”: in a run for Lt Governor of Virginia. The absolute worst thing that can happen to me in this dream? I will fail “daring greatly” and with a neverending smile. And the best thing? That is limited only by an intrepid imagination.

    Levity is Life,

    Gene Rossi

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: any Jewish American who votes for bigot Donald Trump is meshuggana

    From the Clinton campaign:

“Secretary Clinton gave a voluntary interview this morning about her email arrangements while she was Secretary. She is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. Out of respect for the investigative process, she will not comment further on her interview.”
