“No Chance of Ever Becoming Law”: Famous Last Words on 20-Week Abortion Ban

The U.S. House of Representatives today passed a 20-week abortion ban – just eight months after outgoing Republican Delegate Dave Albo, the chair of the Courts Committee, killed a 20-week abortion ban in the House of Delegates because he said the bill had “no chance of ever becoming law” under Governor McAuliffe.

“The ban that passed today, though supported by Donald Trump, faces an uphill battle in the U.S. Senate,” said Democratic Party of Virginia spokeswoman Katie Baker. “However, the threat to women’s health is much more grave here in Richmond, where Jill Vogel and Republicans in both chambers of the General Assembly have already pushed an identical ban. Furthermore, Ed Gillespie has said he would like to see abortion banned, proving that he will not be the same brick wall against attacks on women’s health that we have had in Governor McAuliffe. Although Attorney General Mark Herring has said such a ban is likely unconstitutional, we cannot trust a Trump court to respect Roe v. Wade. Nor can we trust a Republican attorney general such as John Adams – who has called the legal basis of Roe v. Wade ‘really questionable’ –  to fight such a ban. This is why it’s so important that we elect Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax, Mark Herring, and all our Democrats running for the House of Delegates on November 7th. They will stand with Virginia women against these attacks on our rights and health.”

Vogel also sponsored legislation to force women seeking abortions to undergo invasive and medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasounds, while Republicans in the House of Delegates this year passed a woman-shaming resolution that marked the anniversary of Roe v. Wade as a “Day of Tears” on which flags should be flown at half-staff.
