Virginia Campaign Finance Numbers Through 9/30 Coming In; Some VERY Impressive Numbers by Democrats! [UPDATED 10/16]

Campaign finance numbers for 3Q18 (through 9/30) are now coming in at the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) website. I’ll update as I see more information posted. Here’s what it’s looking like for Virginia candidates.

U.S. Senate: Sen. Tim Kaine (D) had net contributions of $1,906,066 and Cash on Hand of $5,011,275; Corey Stewart (R) had net contributions of $1,004,563 and Cash on Hand of $126,021.

VA-01: Democrat Vangie Williams had net contributions of $255,920 and cash on hand of $89,259; Rep. Rob Wittman (R) had net contributions of $238,152 and cash on hand of $960,527.

VA-02: Rep. Scott Taylor (R) had net contributions of $600,529 and cash on hand of $491,670; the Luria campaign sent out a press release around 2:45 Monday afternoon that said her campaign “raised nearly $1.9 million in the third quarter from more than 16,000 individual donors, and will also report having more than $1.3 million cash on hand at the end of the quarter”

VA-03: No numbers available yet on the FEC website for Rep. Bobby Scott (D)

VA-04: Rep. Donald McEachin (D) had net contributions of $139,174 and cash on hand of $398,035;  Ryan McAdams (R) had net contributions of $77,748 and cash on hand of $21,768.

VA-05: Leslie Cockburn (D) had net contributions of $1,134,240 and cash on hand of $1,029,644; Denver Riggleman (R) had net contributions of $685,541 and cash on hand of $505,089.

VA-06: Jennifer Lewis (D) had net contributions of $258,672 and cash on hand of $91,714; Ben Cline (R) had net contributions of $332,217 and cash on hand of $235,705.

VA-07: Abigail Spanberger (D) had net contributions of $3,094,164 and cash on hand of $1,603,711;  Rep. Dave Brat (R) had net contributions of $1,003,900 and cash on hand of $1,338,789.

VA-08: Rep. Don Beyer had net contributions of $277,650 and cash on hand of $994,005; Thomas Oh (R) had net contributions of $28,434 and cash on hand of $8,268.

VA-09: Anthony Flaccavento (D) had net contributions of $501,772 and cash on hand of $161,163; Rep. Morgan Griffith (R) had net contributions of $229,649 and cash on hand of $480,194. Note that Flaccavento’s number really jumped out at me, as it’s a superb total for a Democrat in VA-09. I’m double checking, but that’s what the FEC website says (UPDATE: yep, confirmed it with his campaign – nice job!)

VA-10: Jennifer Wexton (D) had net contributions of $2,612,843 and cash on hand of $1,591,956; Rep. Barbara Comstock (R) had net contributions of $1,145,865 and cash on hand of $1,032,412.

VA-11: Rep. Gerry Connolly (D) had net contributions of $216,431 and cash on hand of $3,160,646; Jeffery Dove (R) had net contributions of $147,173 and cash on hand of $48,429.

Nice going by the Luria campaign (VA-02)!

Elaine Luria Has Record Fundraising Quarter, Brings in Nearly $1.9 million

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Today, Elaine Luria’s campaign for Congress announced that it will report having raised nearly $1.9 million in the third quarter from more than 16,000 individual donors, and will also report having more than $1.3 million cash on hand at the end of the quarter. This will be the highest amount ever raised by a congressional candidate in Virginia’s Second District in a single quarter, eclipsing the $598k that Taylor reported in his April Quarterly Report. Elaine Luria has chosen not to accept contributions from corporate PACs, and is fueled by grassroots donors – nearly 90% of donations to her campaign this quarter were $100 or less.

“There is an unprecedented amount of enthusiasm in this district for Elaine Luria from Virginians who want to elect a former Navy Commander, small business owner, and mother to represent them in Congress,” said Kathryn Sorenson, Elaine Luria’s Campaign Manager.“These supporters know that Elaine is going to fight to make health care more affordable instead of gutting essential protections, and that she will protect their Medicare and Social Security instead of cutting it to pay for tax giveaways to big corporations. Thanks to this tremendous outpouring of grassroots support, we are ready to compete for every vote in every corner of this district.”

I’m happy that Flaccavento is doing so well. As I’ve mentioned before, I had the misfortune to attend high school with Morgan Griffith in Roanoke. He hasn’t changed.

Did he flunk science? Sure seems like he didn’t absorb any of it.

I had the good fortune not to be in any classes with him. But the school’s biology teacher was a football coach, so it’s a wonder I know any science. Morgan was then as he is now, a jerk and a bully.

Yep, he sure seems like that.

I hope Flaccavento wins, though I know it’s a steep climb. I worked with him 1996 – 2001 when I was working for a Methodist church ministry in NE TN – SW VA. He is the real article and a fine person.

Meanwhile — here in Northumberland County (VA-01) — bullshit is starting to litter our roadsides.

Northumberland County is rural — 12,000 souls, twice as many wild turkey, about that many deer, two traffic lights in the county.

Last week, along one of our back roads, I noticed two brand new yard signs, just stuck on the side of the road, no house nearby. The signs read:

    Resist Socialism; Vote Republican

    Results not Resistance; Vote Republican

One of the signs had a statement at the bottom: Authorized and printed by Virginia Patr (I assume “Patr” was supposed to be “patriots”)

So – today, while leaving my car at a local body shop for repairs to a deer strike, there was a customer ahead of me. She was telling the body shop guy hjow ahe had driven 4,000 miles across VA, urging people to get out and vote because the country is in danger if Democrats take over. She turned and handed me a brochure. I refused. She was not happy. I handed the body shop guy the key to my car and left.

I’ve spotted a dozen of the signs around the county. Most of them will disappear tonight.

    Nice job the Cockburn campaign!

LESLIE COCKBURN EXCEEDS $1.1M IN THIRD QUARTER

Campaign enters final stretch with 1M+ cash on hand

Warrenton, VA – Today, Leslie Cockburn, Democratic nominee for Congress in Virginia’s 5th District, announces her campaign raised another $1,140,628.22 during the 3rd quarter of 2018 and currently has $1,036,049.37 cash on hand. With the support of a volunteer force of thousands and consistently high fundraising totals through the Democratic Primary and General Election cycle; 5th district democrats are rising in support of Leslie Cockburn.

Leslie has raised these funds without taking a single penny from Corporate-PAC’s. Instead, the Cockburn campaign is supported by 51,962 individual contributions with an average gift of $46.87. To date, the Cockburn campaign has raised a total of $2,435,636.19, nearly triple her opponent, from supporters motivated by Leslie’s inclusive message of affordable healthcare, better public education, and leveling the economic playing field.

“Democrats, Independents, and fed-up Republicans are turning out in record numbers because they know Leslie Cockburn will bring to bear a chorus of voices in Congress, rather than represent, as Riggleman would, the specials interests of a small number of corporations with undue influence,” said campaign manager Louise Bruce. “Once again, we’re seeing the results of Leslie’s tireless efforts in the 5th. Fifteen months of listening and speaking to voters across the district has energized a groundswell. We are humbled by the outpouring of support on the eve of the election.”

Interesting donations to the Wexton campaign…lifelong Republican (pre-Trump) James Comey and his wife Patrice. Apparently, they can’t stomach the Party of Trump, or of Barbara Comstock voting 98% with Trump.

Vangie Williams Beats Rob Wittman in Fundraising, FEC Filing Reveals

Fredericksburg, Va. – Congressional challenger Vangie Williams (D–King George) raised more money than 11-year incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman (R–Montross) according to recently released 3rd quarter Federal Election Commission reports. Williams raised $255,920 compared to Wittman’s $238,152. While Wittman has a much larger cash-on-hand amount compared to Williams, she has raised the most money of any Democratic candidate in the 1st District since 2010.

“There is significant momentum that is building behind Vangie,” said Joel Leonard, Campaign Manager for Vangie Williams. “The fact that we’re outpacing Rob Wittman’s fundraising is solid proof of that.”

Williams has stated time and time again that she’s running a people-funded campaign. In the 3rd Quarter, Friends of Vangie Williams raised nearly almost $250,000 from 2,109 individuals. During that same period Rob Wittman raised just $89,496 from just 202 individuals, one of the lowest individual donor amounts of any congressional race in Virginia. The rest of Wittman’s contributions were from PACs and two contributions were directly from corporations.

“Wittman’s report is just further proof that he’s out of touch and on the ropes,” said Leonard. Wittman’s report revealed that he has taken money from the tobacco industry, Dominion Energy, oil companies, defense contractors, insurance companies and far-right wing PACs that don’t represent the values of the people of the 1st District.

“Wittman likes to tout his environmental record but he takes money from some of the biggest polluters,” continued Leonard. “He tells people he wants quality affordable healthcare and turns around and takes money from insurance companies who want to limit coverage and raise premiums. His FEC report just confirms what we already know: Rob Wittman is bought and paid for by special interests.”

“I’m proud to be supported so broadly across the 1st District,” added Vangie Williams. “I’ve received contributions from every single county in the district because people know that I will represent them in Congress, not special interests like my opponent.”
