The Arlington School Board voted unanimously last night to add solar on five schools, under a contract resulting from a competitive bidding process. The winning bidder was Sun Tribe Solar of Charlottesville, Virginia.
The “draft comprehensive agreement” will be made available for public inspection under terms to be advertised in the Arlington Sun Gazette. The contract is expected to be signed on November 29.
The school board vote follows a unanimous vote to create the legal authority to enter into a power purchase agreement (PPA) contract, in April 2017, and then a unanimous vote to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for a solar-on-schools PPA, in December 2017.
The contract is based on an RFP with numerous protections for the school system and Arlington taxpayers, as it was structured to attract competition among bidders, and included nine measures to de-risk the solar-on-schools project.
Before the vote, Arlington 350 members Harold Hofstad and Will Driscoll spoke in favor of the solar-on-schools PPA.
The five schools set to receive rooftop solar installations are:
- Fleet Elementary School
- Jefferson Middle School
- Kenmore Middle School
- Tuckahoe Elementary School
- Washington-Lee High School
