UPDATE 5/24: Final Results
With the Virginia Democratic primary for VA05 in just over five weeks, who do you support? The choices are RD Huffstetler, Dr. Cameron Webb, John Lesinski and Claire Russo. To learn some more about them, check out Video: Meet the Democratic Candidates – RD Huffstetler, John Lesinski, Claire Russo, Cameron Webb – Vying to Win Back VA05
As for VA05, the district is huge, made up of parts or all of: Albemarle County (15.25% of district voters), Pittsylvania County (8.45%), Fauquier County (7.98%), Campbell County (7.43%), Franklin County (7.16%), Charlottesville City (6.42%), Bedford County (6.29%), Danville City (5.39%), Halifax County (4.66%), Mecklenburg County (4.22%), Fluvanna County (3.65%), Greene County (2.63%), Prince Edward County (2.55%), Nelson County (2.19%), Appomattox County (2.17%), Brunswick County (2.11%), Buckingham County (2.04%), Henry County (1.90%), Madison County (1.85%), Charlotte County (1.61%), Lunenburg County (1.54%), Cumberland County (1.37%), Rappahannock County (1.14%).
Just to give you a feel for the political makeup of this district, note that it was won by neo-Confederate Corey Stewart over Sen. Tim Kaine in 2018, albeit by a narrow, 50%-48% margin; and by Donald Trump in 2016 by 14 points, so it’s definitely a “red” district. Still, it’s worth pointing out that Rep. Riggleman recently was named (by “Roll Call”) the 4th-most-vulnerable incumbent U.S. House members in the country, in large part because he could lose the GOP nomination to even more far-right/extreme Bob Good. Also, the DCCC last fall added VA05 to its 2020 target list, with Roll Call writing, “Democrats see it moving in their direction, and national Republicans expended resources here both in 2016 and 2018 to keep the seat red.” And with that…feel free to vote in the poll for who you support, and to explain your thinking in the comments section. Thanks.
