Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA02), a former U.S. Navy Commander, comments on former National Security Advisor Gen. Michael Flynn “suggesting a military coup to overthrow our government falls within the definition of sedition under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.” Rep. Luria adds:
“When I hear these words, I have to say that it’s F, the propagation of further lies, in my mind it’s inciting violence…It’s dangerous that someone who served our country and retired as a three-star general is using that position, using that title, using that voice to incite violence…to encourage people overthrow the government as was done in Myanmar. It’s incredibly concerning…It doesn’t make sense [that Flynn has gone in this direction]…There are a lot of questions about whether someone who served in the military continues to receive retirement benefits as a retired officer. I mean, General Flynn receives over $164,000 a year of taxpayer’s money in his position as a retiree and a former general, and the fact that he’s making these comments – inciting violence, recommending that there should be a coup to overthrow the U.S. government – is unconscionable and I truly believe action should be taken against General Flynn…It’s like a crescendo, I keep hearing it’s growing, and the suggestions continue to become more and more violent in nature. And I would say General Flynn’s border on sedition; they’re certainly conduct unbecoming an officer. Those are both things that can be tried under the Uniform Code of Military Justice…it should certainly be a path that we consider to have consequences for those types of words...If you look at the definition of sedition…it’s a person with an intent to cause or overthrow a destruction of lawful civil authority. It’s very clear that in suggesting a military coup to overthrow our government, that that falls…within the definition of sedition under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”
