Virginia Republican Candidate Compares Protection for Marriage Equality to Infamous Pro-Slavery Decision
Christopher Stone said that rulings protecting LGBTQ rights were akin to the Dred Scott case
WASHINGTON — In a recent interview, Christopher Stone, who is challenging Del. Danica Roem, claimed that legal decisions protecting LGBTQ rights were similar to the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision that stated slaves and their descendants were not citizens. This attack opposing marriage equality is completely out of step with Virginia today.
“It is no surprise that Virginia Republicans want to turn back the clock on progress,” said Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee President Jessica Post. “Up and down the ballot, Republicans have been clear that they want to send Virginia into the dark ages, whether it’s opposing marriage equality, banning abortions, or running insurrectionist candidates. While Democrats are focused on making the lives of working families better, Republicans want to start fights to distract from their Trump 2.0 agenda for Virginians.”
Stone is running against Roem, who understands that serving in office means delivering for Virginians. To no surprise, Democrats have made child care more affordable for working families, created tuition-free community college programs, raised the minimum wage, ended surprise medical bills, provided eviction and utility aid, and made Virginia the “Top State for Business.”
