DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and Port City Mayors Praise President Biden, Democrats for Unprecedented Investments In U.S. Ports

Investments will help relieve supply chain challenges and lower costs, no thanks to nearly every Republican in Congress
Earlier today, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison joined the mayors of three major port cities to thank President Biden and Democrats for delivering on his promise to pass an infrastructure plan after less than one year in office. The mayors joining today’s call – hailing from Portsmouth, NH; Richmond, VA; and Savannah, GA – praised Democrats for providing major federal funding to improve waterways and upgrade port infrastructure for their cities.

President Biden’s infrastructure plan includes unprecedented investments for our ports and waterways, which will not only help strengthen supply chains, but also lower costs for working families, create good-paying jobs, and improve U.S. competitiveness. A recording of today’s call is available here.

“By investing in our ports and waterways, we’re going to strengthen our supply chains to get people their stuff faster and cheaper—this is a key piece of Democrats’ plan to bring down costs and fight inflation. That’s the difference between Democrats and Republicans—this isn’t about scoring political points for us, we’ve actually got a plan and they don’t,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison.

“I am also incredibly excited that we have in President Biden a leader who understands that we need to invest in our communities if we want to see them thrive,” said Portsmouth Mayor Deaglan McEachern. “Portsmouth is the hub for New Hampshire imports and exports, anything from salt…heating oil, machine parts—we are connectors to the rest of the world. Our ports must be up-to-date and well-equipped. Robust investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law helps us achieve those goals…By improving efficiency, we lower the cost of these goods landed.”

“No Republicans in Virginia’s congressional delegation voted for this critical infrastructure,” said Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney. “These Republican members voted against billions of dollars in funding to repair, enhance and modernize infrastructure all across the commonwealth. [Republicans] voted against easing commutes for workers, investing in clean water for families, supporting robust port systems for our economy. They have no plan and they’re willing to let Virginia pay the price.”

“We are so excited that President Biden is strengthening our ports here in Savannah… Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Savannah has received $8 billion to expand and improve capacity at the world-class Port of Savannah,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson. “The immediate relief from this historic infrastructure package is helping to ease supply chain stresses, which helps put food on grocery store shelves and fight against inflationary pressures. I’m grateful to the Biden-Harris administration and to our senators, as millions of Georgians are going to see a new generation of economic growth and equity.”
