Richmond Times-Dispatch: Vega declines debate with Spanberger in Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The campaign of U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger today is responding to Yesli Vega’s decision to decline a debate moderated by the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, Virginia Public Media, the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, and League of Women Voters.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on Vega’s decision to decline, writing in part:

“Prince William County Supervisor Yesli Vega has declined to participate in a debate with Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th, that would have been held in Fredericksburg in the heart of the newly drawn 7th Congressional District.”

“‘We had several conversations and we were hoping it would happen, but in the end the answer was no,’ said [Dr. Stephen] Farnsworth, who would have moderated the debate.”

“Since the moment the GOP nominee was declared in June, Abigail Spanberger has said that she looks forward to debating the issues that matter to Virginians. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Yesli Vega,” said Sam Signori, Campaign Manager, Abigail Spanberger for Congress.  “Ms. Vega’s decision to duck this debate is an acknowledgment that her views are far out of step with the people of Virginia’s Seventh District — and that she knows her extreme statements will not withstand basic questioning. As such, Abigail’s campaign has been coordinating with the Prince William Committee of 100 as they work to organize a potential candidate forum; our campaign has confirmed Abigail’s availability to participate in such a forum on October 21st.”

BACKGROUND

Spanberger – a former federal law enforcement officer and CIA case officer –  holds herself accountable to all Virginians – whether they voted for her or not. Since taking office, Spanberger has held more than 40 public town hall events.

Earlier this year, Spanberger was once again ranked as the most bipartisan Member of Congress from Virginia, and among the top five most bipartisan Members of the U.S. House overall.
