David Rothkopf: “It is time the country recognize that the MAGA GOP is the criminal mothership, the entity that made all the crime possible.”

""The GOP has no place in American politics absent massive and at the moment unimaginable change"

Another day, another brilliant thread by David Rothkopf, this time the morning after Fulton County, GA District Attorney Fani Willis lowered the boom on Trump and his co-conspirators for attempting to steal the 2020 election. But, of course, this goes waaaaaayyyy beyond Donald Trump, who absolutely couldn’t have done what he did without the help of many others. As David Rothkopf explains:

  • “Such a massive undertaking–and we may yet see further cases in other states targeted by the Trump effort to steal the election–could not flow from merely one man without the active cooperation of the political institutions supporting him. These are indictments of the GOP.”
  • “The MAGA party as a whole and not just Trump must be seen as central to the schemes–it supported them, it participated in them and it continues to defend them to this day. The Republican Party and not just its leader showed its contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law.”
  • “The Republican Party demonstrated that it did not care about the will of the people. The Republican Party still, on a daily basis, maintains the big lie and protects and elevates the most corrupt political leader and apparatus in U.S. history.”
  • “In jurisdiction after jurisdiction, in crime after crime, Trump and his co-conspirators have had the benefit of arguing that what they were doing was a legitimate political exercise because of the perversity and power-at-all cost appetites of the GOP.”
  • “It is a mistake to simply personalize these crimes to Trump and the handful of political mobsters closest to him. (Although they must be held to account.) It is time the country recognize that the MAGA GOP is the criminal mothership, the entity that made all the crime possible.”
  • “It is time to move on from the Republican Party despite all the accomplishments of leaders from Lincoln to Eisenhower. It is now defined by little more than threat it poses and the twisted character it has absorbed from the leaders who have degraded it.”
  • “The GOP has no place in American politics absent massive and at the moment unimaginable change. Who will step up? Who will assume its role? Will they claim what is sound from its legacy or will they compound its failures and crimes?”
