Today, national security expert Krystle Kaul officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination to represent Virginia’s 10th district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“As the granddaughter of Indian immigrants, I know firsthand the promise of the American Dream because I’ve benefited from the opportunities it gave my family,” said Kaul. “I have spent my professional career in high stakes defense and national security work, defending America and protecting the country that welcomed my grandfather with open arms. Now, I’m running for Congress to ensure every family has the same opportunity to live their own American dream.”
Only five Indian Americans currently serve in Congress, and if elected, Kaul would be only the second Indian American woman in Congress.
As a small business owner, a teacher, and a leader in the defense intelligence community, Kaul will use her voice in Congress to stand up for women’s reproductive rights, access to affordable health care, good-paying jobs and a thriving economy, and safe schools that provide our children with an excellent education.
“My grandfather started his life in India. When he got to America, he didn’t have a dime, but through a little bit of luck, and a lot of hard work, he lived the American dream. I’m running for Congress to protect the country that welcomed my grandfather with open arms, to build a Virginia where everyone has a shot at their own American dream, and to show up for Virginia families, the same way this country showed up for mine,” Kaul said.
In a world that gets more dangerous every day, Kaul’s security background is pivotal in ensuring the safety of Americans and the protection of our democracy. Having served as a Director (GS-15) of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency at DoD, the Director of Strategic Communications of the U.S. Air Force and NATO for General Dynamics Information Technology, and as an Intelligence Political-Military Expert at U.S. Central Command, Kaul has honed a career defined by versatility and high-stakes decision-making. Her work, including leading a transformative $180 million USAID program that facilitated job creation for Afghan women and coordinating intelligence operations against ISIS while at the U.S. Central Command, has taken her to 71 countries and enhanced her fluency in languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Spanish, Arabic, Punjabi, Italian, and Dari. These endeavors underscore the scope of her abilities and the significant influence of her work, further substantiated by her active Top Secret/SCI clearance.
Most recently, she has helped create economic opportunity for others through her own small business, which assists 8(a) firms, disabled Veteran and women-owned businesses, as well as medium to large companies in helping them to apply their solutions to safeguard the U.S. She also teaches at MIT through 2U committed to helping industry professionals improve their soft skills.
