Ranking Member Connolly’s Statement on Postmaster General DeJoy’s DOGE Infiltration Update
Washington, D.C. (March 17, 2025)—Today, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement after Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sent a letter to Congress seeking to explain why he entered the Postal Service into an agreement with the General Services Administration and DOGE representatives and is allowing Elon Musk to infiltrate the independent U.S. Postal Service:

“The Postmaster General is trying to rewrite history after cutting a backroom deal to turn the keys of the Postal Service over to Elon Musk and DOGE.  This letter is rife with contradictions and does nothing to assuage concerns about his ‘agreement’ with DOGE.  DeJoy cannot decry a lack of collaboration with Congress while rejecting Congressional requests for transparency and reforms. He cannot claim to recognize the independence of the Postal Service while putting out the welcome mat for DOGE to forcefully and unlawfully implement his favored reforms behind Congress’s back and at the expense of Americans’ mail service and the agency’s independence.

“I am a willing partner in the effort to strengthen the Postal Service.  I co-led bipartisan Postal Reform, which relieved the Postal Service of more than $50 billion in unnecessary mandates, and I have consistently advocated for some of the very reforms Postmaster DeJoy says he needs.  But I will not blindly support a DOGE chainsaw approach to America’s most trusted institution.”

The letter suggests alarming actions for DOGE to pursue, many of which are outside its authority to address, and would drastically undermine the nonpartisan, independent organization of the Postal Service.  This includes DeJoy’s call to gut or even terminate the Postal Regulatory Commission, the independent regulator of the Postal Service created by Congress and responsible for approving rate changes and ensuring appropriate service.  The Postal Service is a constitutionally mandated public service not a money-making corporation.  Postmaster General DeJoy, Elon Musk, and DOGE politicizing America’s most popular government service is not in the American public’s best interest and will only further degrade trust in the federal government.
