Virginia Teacher and Elected Leaders Call on GOP Governor Candidates to Stand Up for Virginia Students
VIRGINIA – Today, following Donald Trump’s recent executive order dismantling the Department of Education, a Virginia teacher and elected officials called on GOP Governor candidates to stand up for Virginia students. They also discussed how Virginia needs leaders who are focused on creating opportunities for students and standing up to chaos that will harm Virginia’s rural schools, Head Start programs, students with disabilities, and Pell Grant recipients who rely on funding to access higher education.
Winsome Earle-Sears, Dave LaRock, and Amanda Chase all support extreme agendas that would strip funding from Virginia schools and create chaos and uncertainty for Virginia students and their families.
“With Head Start and resources that support rural schools and students with disabilities at risk of being cut, it’s going to be that much harder for students across Virginia to succeed and for their teachers and families to support them along the way. We should be making it easier for our kids – not harder. Virginia needs a leader who understands that and the three GOP candidates running for Governor definitely don’t,” said state Senator Lashresce Aird.
“Throughout my career, I’ve seen how important it is that we have leaders who fight for our students, invest in our schools, and make sure that every Virginian has the opportunity to thrive. With Donald Trump’s executive order that’s begun the process of dismantling the Department of Education and a governor who won’t enact legislation that supports our students, all the progress we’ve made is at risk,” said Delegate Reverend Delores McQuinn.
“The ongoing chaos, uncertainty, and instability isn’t a learning environment that our kids can thrive in – any parent knows that. It’s why it’s even more important that Virginia has strong statewide leaders who are focused on strengthening our education system, creating opportunity, and standing up when the programs that help students succeed are being targeted,” said Delegate Michael Feggans.
“I have more than a decade of experience in teaching and it worries me to not just see Donald Trump sign an executive order that could harm students in Virginia, but to see leaders across the Commonwealth support this action. Virginia’s leaders should be focused on making sure our students have the best opportunity to succeed and this executive order doesn’t do that,” said Virginia teacher Darrell Turner.
