Per VPAP, here are the Virginia legislators with the largest and smallest stock portfolios. As you can see, only 21 legislators (out of 140) have securities portfolios of $1 million or more, with another 15 at $500,000-$999,999. In contrast, 34 legislators have “no securities valued over $5,000,” with 36 legislators at $5,000-$99,000 and 34 at $100,000-$499,999. And there really doesn’t seem to be much correlation between the value of stock portfolios and political party (or voting behavior), although there definitely are more Democrats than Republicans with $5,000 or less. Finally, if you look at which stocks the Delegates and State Senators hold, there doesn’t seem to be any connection between personal values or voting behavior and the types of securities owned (e.g., environmentalists owning oil stocks and liberals owning shares of companies owned by Trump-supporting MAGAs). Not much sign, in other words, of people investing their money with their values or politics in mind…
