Spanberger Statement Marking Three Years Since Dobbs Decision

Spanberger: “As the Next Governor of Virginia, I Will Always Protect the Right to Choose, the Right to Privacy, and the Right to Decide When to Start or Grow a Family”

RICHMOND, Va — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement marking three years since the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization — reiterating her commitment to defending reproductive freedom as the next Governor of Virginia.

“Three years ago today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, opening the door for restrictions on the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions. And three years ago, I remember receiving distraught messages, texts, and calls from women across Virginia — Democrats, Republicans, and those who had never engaged in politics before. They were terrified for the future.

“In the aftermath of the Dobbs decision, a wave of extreme restrictions has swept across the South — and only because of the unwavering leadership of Democrats in our General Assembly, Virginia has avoided going backward. But we cannot rest in the face of ongoing threats, and we must stand strong in defense of reproductive freedom.

“Virginia deserves a Governor who will put pen to paper to defend their freedoms — not impose an extreme agenda or pretend that threats to their rights aren’t real. As the next Governor of Virginia, I will always protect the right to choose, the right to privacy, and the right to decide when to start or grow a family. This November, Virginians will elect leaders who believe that politicians should never dictate these personal healthcare decisions.”
