Yes, Winsome Earle-Sears’ political ally, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL19), is virulently anti-reproductive-freedom (as the press release from DPVA, below, points out), and that’s important to let people know about. But it’s waaaaayyy worse than that if you spend a few minutes looking at Donalds’ far-right extremist record. In addition to being anti-abortion, which almost all Republicans are these days, Byron Donalds also:
- “claimed that Joe Biden was not the legitimate president” (100% false and batsh** crazy)
- said “during Jim Crow, the black family was together” (then, after major backlash, he clarified that he didn’t mean “that Black people were doing better under Jim Crow” or that “Jim Crow is great”)
- said “When it comes to due process, that is a privilege reserved for American citizens” (that’s 100% false, obviously, and also dangerous);
- said Democrats’ positions “differ…very greatly from what the Bible says” (that’s theocracy and false, too…in fact, Democrats’ positions are much closer than Republcians to the New Testament on a wide variety of issues, from welcoming the stranger to feeding/clothing the poor to…you name it, really)
- “voted against the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022 which expanded VA benefits to veterans exposed to toxic chemicals during their military service” (appalling)
- Spoke at an event ” hosted by the Truth & Liberty Coalition, a group that pushes to inject Christianity into public schools and other institutions and whose leader has described homosexuality as Satan’s work.” Also said “Homosexuality is a sin just like any other sexual sin, and all of us sinners need forgiveness & mercy for our shortcomings” and “described heterosexual relationships as ‘the natural order that keeps society progressing.'”
- “As a state legislator, Mr. Donalds…created a school voucher program that, in the words of one speaker, let children “get a biblical worldview education.” (source)
- Is a climate science denier who said, “when asked…if he thought there was a correlation between recent heat waves and climate change, replied simply, ‘No, I don’t.’”
