ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – Today, elected leaders and Virginians continued the “Worst of Winsome” tour, calling out Sears’ extreme record including her anti-abortion agenda and cheering on the attacks on Virginia jobs and Virginia’s economy.
“I am here today because thirty-three years ago I was able to make my own choices about my health with my own doctor. A woman’s reproductive rights should be her own. We need leaders who understand that and will protect a woman’s right to make her own choices. Winsome Earle-Sears has been clear she won’t do that,” said Jenny Higginbotham, a Virginian with a personal reproductive care story.
“Looking at Winsome Earle-Sears’ extreme record, it’s crystal clear that if she makes it to the Governor’s mansion she won’t fight for Virginians, she’ll just push her extreme agenda forward,” said Senator Saddam Azlan Salim. “From rolling back reproductive rights and supporting a near total abortion ban to backing Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs and Medicaid to defunding public education and being ‘morally opposed’ to marriage equality, Winsome Earle-Sears is wrong for Virginia.”
“As a representative of Virginia’s 27th District, an area with thousands of federal workers, I know first-hand how harmful Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs have been,” said Delegate Atoosa Reaser. “For Winsome Earle-Sears to say she doesn’t understand that or why it’s a ‘huge, huge thing’ to lose your job’ is outright dismissive and proves that she can’t be trusted to fight for Virginia.”
Here’s what to know about Sears’ extreme record:
- Sears supports an extreme six week abortion ban similar to the law that took effect in Texas that bans abortion before most women know they are pregnant.
- Sears told Virginia women “we need to make our choices before we’re pregnant, not, you know, after, you already made a choice,” and left a handwritten note that she is “morally opposed to this bill […]” on the constitutional amendment that would protect reproductive freedom in Virginia, including contraception, abortion, and IVF.
- Sears has defended Trump’s attacks on Virginia’s workforce and economy and she would help Trump “get the job done” if she were governor.
- Sears was caught on tape dismissing and laughing off the attacks on Virginia jobs saying “the media is making it out to be a huge, huge thing… and I don’t understand why.”
- Sears has a long record of supporting legislation that would cut funding from Virginia’s public schools.
- Sears has repeatedly refused to oppose the proposed Medicaid cuts that would leave thousands of Virginians without access to affordable healthcare.
- Sears also left a handwritten note on a bill protecting marriage equality that she is “morally opposed” to the legislation and Sears doubled down on her opposition to marriage equality and refused to say that she would support anything other than civil unions for same-sex couples.
