NEW from CNN: When Asked, Winsome Earle-Sears Refuses To Say She Won’t Ban Abortion As Governor
CNN: Sears refused to “clarify if that meant she would push for more restrictions if elected governor”
VIRGINIA – In a new interview with CNN, Winsome Earle-Sears refused to say she won’t work to ban abortion in Virginia as Governor and was “noncommittal when asked whether she would consider another push to restrict abortion rights.”
This follows Sears leaving a handwritten note that she is “morally opposed” to a constitutional amendment that would protect reproductive freedom in Virginia, including contraception, abortion, and IVF. Earlier this year, Sears also cast the tie-breaking vote against a bill that would have protected access to birth control and contraception.
“Winsome Earle-Sears has a dangerous record attacking reproductive rights from supporting a near-total abortion ban to celebrating the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Sears owes answers to Virginia women on why she doesn’t trust women to make their own healthcare decisions,” said DPVA Communications Director Kelsey Carolan.
CNN: Facing GOP skeptics, Republican Winsome Earle-Sears insists she can win Virginia governor’s race
- Earle-Sears is steadfast in her socially conservative views, putting herself to the right of some Republicans. Last year she hand-wrote a note on a marriage equality bill that passed the general assembly signaling her moral opposition to same-sex marriage. She did the same on a reproductive rights bill.
- In 2023, Youngkin embraced a 15-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother, but voters rejected that approach by denying the governor and his party the legislative majorities to enact his agenda.
- Earle-Sears was noncommittal when asked whether she would consider another push to restrict abortion rights.
- “We got to get in a room and figure it out. That’s what we have to do,” Earle-Sears told CNN, refusing to clarify if that meant she would push for more restrictions if elected governor.
