After Backing Trump’s Tax Bill with Medicaid Cuts, Sears Tells the 322,000 Virginians Being Stripped of Health Insurance “Don’t Panic”

VIRGINIA – New reporting from 13 News Now highlights Winsome Earle-Sears telling the 322,000 Virginians being stripped of health insurance because of Donald Trump’s tax bill Sears backed “don’t panic.” Sears previously cheered on Trump’s tax bill passing, saying it “does so many great things.”

“As 322,000 Virginians are being stripped of their health insurance and rural hospitals are at risk of closing, it’s disappointing that after supporting these cuts, all Winsome Earle-Sears has to say is ‘don’t panic.’ Virginians deserve a leader who will offer solutions that put Virginia first, not dismissive and empty advice, ” said DPVA Spokesperson Maggie Amjad.

Reporter: We’ve heard concerns raised about the potential impact of Medicaid cuts in Virginia and rural hospitals inparticular. What’s your response to that? Are you concerned about how that might play out and who might be affected? 

Winsome Earle-Sears: As a matter of fact, I just met with, and I won’t say who hospital associations in Virginia, specifically, more rural inclined. And if I could just say it this way, I think you have seen already that there are committees in Congress that have already formed to address some of the very taxing issues that we’re thinking about, because we want to ensure that all of Virginia has access to health care. So this is not something that we are not concerned about, but in Virginia, which is something that I did not mention, we are ready and able to help any Virginian who is well not able to have access to health care. We have a billion dollar surplus and on top of everything that I’ve just talked about on why we should have still been named number one, and so we’re looking at everything I know Congressman Morgan Griffith, who’s heading up the Health Care Committee. And you know, he’s our guy here. He understands what needs to happen. 

Sears: And so I would say to Virginia, don’t panic. Things are being worked out.
