Hashmi Joins Spanberger, Jones, and Education Leaders in Announcing Strengthening Virginia Schools Plan
PORTSMOUTH – Today, State Senator Ghazala Hashmi (D-SD15), Democratic nominee for Virginia Lieutenant Governor, joined Governor nominee Abigail Spanberger in announcing a plan to strengthen Virginia’s schools at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth.
The plan focuses on:
- Addressing Virginia’s teacher shortage by recruiting, retaining, and providing ongoing support to high-quality teachers
- Making college more affordable and accessible for Virginia students and protecting Virginia’s institutions of higher education from political influence
- Ensuring parents have access to high-quality, affordable child care and early childhood education options in their area
“This is such an important time for all of us to protect our schools, our students, and our educators. As an educator myself, I spent 30 years teaching American literature. I have the honor of chairing the Committee on Education and Health in the Virginia Senate. Over the past several years under Democratic legislative leadership, we have worked assiduously to respond to the issues that are facing our public schools. We’ve done that by lifting the support cap, making historic investments into our public schools, and increasing pay for our teachers.
Over the next few years we are going to focus on providing high-quality early childhood education, attracting and retaining more teachers and supporting them with professional development, providing support resources, and developing skills that will prepare our children for the economy of this century. We are going to be working hand-in-hand with educators and everyone who fights for public education.
While our opponents are focused on defunding public education, my Virginia Democratic colleagues and I are focused on defending public education,” stated State Senator Ghazala Hashmi.
In addition to Spanberger and Hashmi, Attorney General nominee Jay Jones, State Senator L. Louise Lucas, Portsmouth Middle School Teacher of the Year Shauneille Perry-Wallace, and local parent Antonne Smalls joined the event.
