Norfolk, VA – Days after President Trump fired Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Erik Siebert simply for refusing to prosecute his political opponents, MAGA Jason Miyares has yet to condemn the blatant abuse of power. This is the second time in weeks that Trump has ousted a prominent Virginia Republican following the forced resignation of former GOP House Speaker Todd Gilbert, whose nomination had bipartisan support.
After celebrating Siebert’s appointment in January, Miyares’ silence proves his pattern of putting loyalty to Trump ahead of defending Virginia’s justice system and protecting the rule of law.
In response, Jay Jones, Democratic nominee for Attorney General, put out the following statement:
“Jason Miyares is silent as President Trump fires yet another dedicated Virginia public official, Interim U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert, simply because he refused to prosecute Trump’s political opponents.
“Whether it’s attacks on our justice system, illegal tariffs wrecking our economy, or Medicaid cuts taking healthcare from 300,000 Virginians, Miyares chooses loyalty to Trump over defending our Commonwealth.
“If Miyares won’t stand up to such blatant abuses of power against a Republican prosecutor, how can Virginians trust him to stand up for us? As Attorney General, I will always put Virginia first.”
