RICHMOND, Va. — Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement responding to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing annual inflation has reached the highest level since the start of the year “as a jump in gasoline and energy prices pushed price growth.”
“Everywhere I travel across the Commonwealth — from Arlington to Abingdon, I meet Virginians who are working longer hours but still feel like they can’t keep up with everyday expenses. Surging energy prices are a big part of the problem, and this new data confirms the concerns I’m hearing from families and small businesses about the cost of their utility bills.
“Virginia’s statewide leaders should always work to address the top-of-mind challenges facing families. That’s why earlier this year, I announced my Affordable Virginia Plan focused on lowering energy costs for Virginians, meeting rising demand, and putting Virginia on the path toward greater energy independence. As Virginia’s next Governor, I’m ready to work with anyone — from either party — to save Virginians’ money and make sure families can continue to afford to call the Commonwealth home.”
According to this new data, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 3 percent in September — the highest level since January. According to BLS, electricity prices rose 5.1 percent and piped gas service rose 11.7 percent. This new economic data comes as a new report released last week by the University of Virginia showed Virginia’s rate of economic growth slowed to its lowest point since 2021 and projected that Virginia’s unemployment rate will reach its highest point since 2020 next year.
BACKGROUND
Earlier this year — Spanberger rolled out her Affordable Virginia Plan to lower Virginians’ energy, healthcare, and housing costs. Spanberger’s plan is focused on lowering energy costs for Virginians by increasing local energy generation to meet rising demand, making sure data centers don’t drive up energy prices for other consumers, and addressing regulatory issues to speed up new energy projects.
Spanberger has also announced her Growing Virginia Plan and Strengthening Virginia Schools Plan — showing that her administration will be ready on day one to address challenges facing Virginia’s economy and schools.
As a Member of Congress, Spanberger built a record of working with both Democrats and Republicans to deliver results for Virginians — and was named the most bipartisan Member of Congress from Virginia.
