I’m giving this its own separate post because I think it merits it. Why? Very simple: because Democrats should *always* call out extremists, including insurrectionists, in the Republican Party. Unfortunately, we still see FAR too many Democrats who remain (delusionally) committed to “my friends across the aisle” bipartisan blather in the post-January 6th-insurrection, authoritarian, lawless, etc. MAGA nightmare we’re living in. Instead, how about let’s see Democratic leaders, and those who want to be leaders, using the type of language that former Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA05) uses in this press release:
- “Crisis reveals character. Five years ago, John McGuire stood with insurrectionists on the day they followed a Q-Anon Shaman to attack our nation’s Capitol, our law enforcement officials sworn to protect it, and our Constitution’s sacred promise of a peaceful, democratic transfer of power.”
- “This anniversary should honor those who served courageously to defend our Constitution, including those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The President makes a mockery of their service by pardoning criminals and conducting vengeance campaigns to demote those who have served honorably.”
And remember, John McGuire owes his place in the US House not to any merit whatsoever – he was a worthless member of the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate, has accomplished absolutely NOTHING in the U.S. House, other than being a boot-licking, sycophantic enabler for every bad thing Trump has done, etc. – but 100% to his cult leder, Trump. Also note that McGuire has done nothing good for VA05, and a lot to hurt the very people he’s supposed to be helping. So yeah, this coming November, McGuire really really needs to be booted the hell outta there – and replaced by someone who actually respects the oath of office and cares about the people of the district.

Perriello Calls Out McGuire for Attendance at Jan. 6 Insurrection |
| CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Former Congressman Tom Perriello, who is running to represent the 5th Congressional District, today issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection:
“Crisis reveals character. Five years ago, John McGuire stood with insurrectionists on the day they followed a Q-Anon Shaman to attack our nation’s Capitol, our law enforcement officials sworn to protect it, and our Constitution’s sacred promise of a peaceful, democratic transfer of power. On that same day, Americans in uniform and in public service proved their patriotism by following the law instead of the mob, and their courage by risking their lives and careers to honor the oath they swore to protect this country from all enemies, foreign or domestic. “Those put at risk on January 6th included the Capitol Police officers and families who were visiting the Capitol that day, as well as members of the Virginia National Guard and state and local law enforcement officers who were deployed from the Commonwealth to respond to the riot. John McGuire, who was not yet a member of Congress, was nonetheless at the Capitol that day as an attendee of the insurrection and stood proudly by the Proud Boys and neo-Nazis who committed this assault on our democracy. “This anniversary should honor those who served courageously to defend our Constitution, including those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The President makes a mockery of their service by pardoning criminals and conducting vengeance campaigns to demote those who have served honorably. One week, Trump pardons a narco-trafficker and, the next week, deploys our brave soldiers to capture a different narco-trafficker so that Trump and his cronies can cash in on oil deals. Congress, the co-equal legislative branch, lacks the courage, values and patriotism to provide any check on this contempt for the rule of law, disregard for constitutional limits, and a willingness to use chaos and fear to cling to power. “The legacy of these moments matter. When a hate-filled, heavily-armed mob invaded Charlottesville in August of 2017, our community joined together to repel those who would attack and divide us. While President Trump called them ‘very fine people,’ our leaders imposed consequences, under the law, to deter further violence. I have faith in our country and our Constitution to persevere. I am running for Congress to ensure that the seat first held by the author of the U.S. Constitution is held by a Representative ready to protect its exceptional promise from all threats, at home and abroad.” |
