ICYMI: MAGA Mike Johnson to Campaign Against Virginia Effort That Lets Voters Level the Playing Field

After Silence on MAGA Gerrymandering Nationwide, National Republicans Target Virginia’s Voter-Led Process

Richmond, Va. — New reporting yesterday revealed that House Speaker “MAGA” Mike Johnson will headline an April 11 event in Great Falls opposing Virginia’s redistricting referendum. A YES vote on the measure would put the power to stop Donald Trump’s power grab and level the playing field directly in voters’ hands.

Johnson’s involvement comes after MAGA Republicans across the country have moved to redraw congressional maps mid-decade at Trump’s demand in states like Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Missouri — with no voter approval and no objection from national GOP leadership.

Now, those same leaders are intervening in Virginia — where voters, not MAGA politicians, will have the final say.

“In every red state, this is happening behind closed doors,” Gottlieb added. “In Virginia, we’re putting it directly to the people — and that’s exactly what they’re trying to stop.”

“You can’t make this up,” said Dan Gottlieb, Communications Director for Virginians for Fair Elections. “MAGA Republicans said nothing while Trump demanded maps be redrawn behind closed doors across the country — but the moment Virginians have the power to level the playing field and stop Trump’s power grab, they rush in to try to stop it. That tells you exactly what this is about.”

Early voting is underway now through April 18. Election Day is April 21.
