ICYMI: Don Scott and L. Louise Lucas — Stand up for democracy by voting YES

Richmond, Va. — Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Don Scott and Senate Pro Tempore L. Louise Lucas today wrote an op-ed underscoring why Virginians must vote YES on the upcoming redistricting referendum. Speaker Scott and Senator Lucas have been vocal champions for the effort to level the playing field and stop Donald Trump’s attempts to rig the 2026 midterm elections.

Read highlights from the article:

  • Facing the consequences of his unpopular record in a difficult midterm election cycle, President Donald Trump is turning to the maps to hang on to full power in Washington. In Texas and North Carolina, and with efforts underway in Florida at his direction, MAGA Republicans are pursuing aggressive mid-decade redistricting to lock in power before voters can take it away.

  • As president, Trump has undermined voting protections, attacked diversity initiatives and backed policies that disproportionately strip health care and economic opportunity from Black communities.

  • When leaders believe they may lose, they change the rules without citizens’ approval. It is Trump insulating himself from accountability.

  • Voting “Yes” on April 21 is a measured but necessary step to level the playing field for Virginians and defend fair representation in light of Trump’s actions. It is taken because when democratic norms are strained, responsible leaders act to protect them.

  • This vote ensures Virginia does not become complicit in an effort to entrench unchecked power and insulate one political movement from the will of voters.

  • We are patriots. We believe in the Constitution and in representative government. But this moment requires action. Yet we cannot sit back while Trump’s coordinated national strategy seeks to rig representation itself.

  • The real solution is national reform. We support a nationwide ban on partisan gerrymandering so no state can manipulate maps for partisan advantage. Republicans in Congress have repeatedly blocked those reforms, leaving states such as Virginia to take temporary steps to protect voters.

  • Our responsibility is heavier because of our inheritance. We stand in positions once denied to Black Virginians for centuries. That history does not grant us comfort. It demands courage.

  • On April 21, Virginia has the opportunity to stand up for the Constitution, for fair representation and for a democracy accountable to the people. A ” Yes” vote is a vote to level the playing field and let voters — not Trump — decide.

About Virginians for Fair Elections

Virginians for Fair Elections is the campaign advocating for a constitutional amendment to protect fair representation and ensure Virginia voters — not politicians — have the final say over congressional district maps. The amendment is a temporary, emergency exception designed to level the playing field for Virginia’s congressional elections, with the Commonwealth’s bipartisan redistricting commission resuming full authority after the 2030 census.
