Rep. Jen Kiggans Denies Rising Costs as Virginia Families Feel the Squeeze

Virginia Beach, VA – After Affordable Virginia held a gas card giveaway to help families in Hampton Roads as they struggle with prices surging at the pump, Rep. Jen Kiggans responded to 13News Now’s coverage of the event, denying that costs have risen under her watch, saying:

“Republicans have returned America to energy dominance, brought down prices and when Iran can no longer threaten energy supplies prices will go even lower. Under Joe Biden that $25.00 gas card wouldn’t have filled your tank for a couple of days.”

Let’s take a look at the facts:

• Experts say the war in Iran is driving up prices at the pump. Rep. Jen Kiggans’ has been adamantly supporting the billion-dollar-a-day war in Iran. Just last week, the price of gas has skyrocketed 18 cents per gallon in Hampton Roads.

• Rep. Jen Kiggans voted to raise the cost of energy when she eliminated energy tax credits that many working families relied on to lower home energy costs. The average Virginia household is expected to pay at least $110 more in energy bills this year due to this vote.

“It’s almost laughable that Rep. Jen Kiggans would try to deny that costs have gone up when families are feeling it every single day,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaign Director. “Instead of dismissing reality, she should talk to her constituents. I guarantee they’ll tell her the truth: gas is up, groceries are up, health care is up, even basic essentials like toilet paper are more expensive. There’s no denying it, and there’s a direct line between the votes she’s taken and the higher costs families are now stuck paying. It’s not too late, Rep. Kiggans. We are calling on you to start voting to lower costs for your constituents.”

In addition to raising energy costs, Rep. Jen Kiggans has:

• Voted to raise the cost of healthcare with her vote to slash Medicaid for 260,000 Virginians and her vote to not extend critical health care tax credits that helped 21,000 of her constituents afford care, resulting in 33,000 Virginians dropping their health insurance.

• Voted to raise the cost of food and other essential items by repeatedly voting to allow cost-raising and job-killing tariffs that have resulted in rising prices on nearly everything, including groceries, and essential items like toilet paper and soap.
