Equality Virginia PAC Donates $50,000 to Virginia House Democratic Caucus to Support LGBTQ Equality

RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 9, 2021)  Today Equality Virginia’s Political Action Committee (EV PAC) announced a $50,000 donation to the Virginia House of Delegates’ democratic caucus ahead of the November election.

Virginia’s Nov. 2 election includes races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and all 100 House of Delegates seats. EV PAC hopes that this investment will keep a pro-equality majority in the House.

Recently, Virginia passed a wave of pro-equality legislation, including: LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections through the Virginia Values Act, protecting youth from conversion therapy, updating the birth certificate and state ID processes for transgender and nonbinary Virginians, making schools safer for LGBTQ students, modernizing HIV laws, and banning the LGBTQ “panic defense.”

Given the rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in recent months, EV PAC is determined to keep pro-equality delegates in the majority in the House to prevent a potential roll-back of recent wins and to curb the continued attacks on transgender and nonbinary students.

“The stakes are incredibly high for LGBTQ Virginians this November and it is imperative that Eileen Filler-Corn remain Speaker,” said Vee Lamneck, Equality Virginia Advocates Executive Director. “This donation helps to keep the House majority in the hands of pro-equality champions who will maintain important nondiscrimination protections and support transgender and nonbinary students. We’ve passed significant and lifesaving legislation since 2020 and we must continue this momentum to create a safer and more equitable state for everyone.”

“This incredible investment from Equality Virginia is crucial to keeping LGBTQ advocates in control of the House of Delegates,” said Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn. “We must build on the progress that we have made in recent years. I want to thank the team at Equality Virginia for helping us in this fight, and I look forward to working with them to continue building a more open and just Commonwealth.”

“Virginia is the number one state for business thanks to the pro-equality legislation that was passed over the last two years,” said House Majority Leader Charniele Herring. “People want to live and work in communities that are welcoming and safe for everyone.  The commonwealth needs elected leaders who will fight for LGBTQ equality.”

In addition to this contribution, EV Advocates will announce on Friday the endorsements of 47 incumbent delegates who have demonstrated a commitment to LGBTQ equality. A joint Day of Action to benefit endorsed candidates in highly contested races is planned for Saturday, Oct. 9, with Virginia-based members of the Human Rights Campaign.
