Congresswoman Luria’s Busy Week: Securing a Historic Pay Raise for Veterans, Winning the First VA-02 Debate, and Leading a January 6th Committee Hearing

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Former small business owner and 20-year Navy veteran Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA-02) visited a senior center to highlight expanded veteran care and lower prescription drug costs, secured the largest pay raise for disabled veterans and military families in 40 years, won the first VA-02 debate, and led part of a Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol hearing this week.

To begin the week, President Joe Biden signed Congresswoman Luria’s bipartisan Veterans’ Compensation Cost Adjustment Act of 2022 into law for the fourth straight year on Monday to increase compensation and benefits for certain Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, including dependency and indemnity benefits paid to survivors and families of service members who died in the line of duty or suffer from a service-related injury or disease.

On Tuesday, Congresswoman Luria visited PrimePlus Senior Center in Virginia Beach to highlight expanded veteran health care services and her efforts to lower prescription drug costs for seniors. The Inflation Reduction Act allows the federal government to negotiate prices for prescription drugs, limits out-of-pocket prescription costs for seniors, and caps the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors and individuals with disabilities on Medicare.

Congresswoman Luria resoundingly won the first debate for Virginia’s Second Congressional District and ‘touted legislation’ while Jen Kiggans ‘was light on solutions’ on Wednesday. She continued to highlight her record of delivering for Coastal Virginia by expanding veteran health care, lowering costs for working families, providing for small businesses, and securing billions in defense investments to stand up to China.

Kiggans repeatedly refused to answer whether Joe Biden is President of the United States at Wednesday’s debate and ran away from several reporters asking if he won a free and fair election

On Thursday, Congresswoman Luria led part of the hearing of the Select Committee to Investigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Washington Post reported, “Just 24 hours ago, Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.) faced off against her Republican opponent in the first debate in what is considered a bellwether race for the November midterms.”

The Social Security Administration announced on Thursday that disabled veterans and military families will be eligible for the largest increase in compensation and benefits in 40 years, 8.7 percent, thanks to the Congresswoman’s Veterans’ COLA Act that was signed into law earlier in the week.

Congresswoman Elaine Luria represents Virginia’s Second Congressional District, which includes all of Accomack and Northampton Counties, the cities of Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, as well as portions of Norfolk City, Hampton, and York and James City Counties. The new district lines will include all of Accomack, Isle of Wight, and Northampton Counties, the cities of Franklin, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, as well as portions of Chesapeake and Southampton Counties. Congresswoman Luria serves as the Vice Chair on the House Armed Services Committee as well as on the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee and Readiness Subcommittee, the House Veterans Affairs Committee where she is the Chair of the Disability and Memorial Assistance Subcommittee, and the House Committee on Homeland Security. In July of 2021, Congresswoman Luria was appointed to serve on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. In 2020, Congresswoman Luria was elected to a second term. Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District has been added to the DCCC’s Frontline program for 2022.
