As I wrote here, I'm really bummed about Noah Simon resigning from the Arlington County School Board due to totally understandable, but sad, family reasons. Good luck to Nancy Van Doren (for my interview with her, click here), who I got to know, respect and like in her run during the spring!

ARLINGTON, VA. (July 1, 2014) – Nancy Van Doren, a long-time education advocate, paid tribute to Arlington School Board member Noah Simon, who announced today that he plans to step down from his post in early August.

“Noah is a well-respected, well-loved member of the School Board and Arlington community.  He has set a very high mark for effective, thoughtful, and compassionate service on behalf of Arlington's children, families, and educators,” Van Doren said.

“This is an unexpected turn of events,” Van Doren said. “Noah has given us his all and he will be missed on the School Board.”

Van Doren announced that she will seek election to the School Board seat being vacated by Simon. The vacancy will be filled through a Special Election later this year. Van Doren also plans to seek the endorsement of the Arlington County Democratic Committee.

“It is a critical time in our community as we work to manage our growing school system. I am prepared to meet the challenges facing our schools and therefore am announcing today that I will seek election to the seat that Noah is leaving,” Van Doren said.

Simon is resigning his position on the School Board to spend more time with his children. Kedron Simon, Noah's wife, passed away on

December 30, 2013.

Van Doren, Greg Greeley, and Barbara Kanninen recently competed May 15-17 for the Arlington County Democratic Party's endorsement for the School Board seat now held by Sally Baird, who is not seeking re-election. Barbara Kanninen won the Democratic Party endorsement for that seat and will seek election in the November 4th general election.

Greg Greeley endorsed Van Doren in the Special Election for Simon's seat.

“Nancy has my wholehearted support and endorsement. She will be a great advocate for Arlington students,” Greeley said. “I look forward to working with her to take on the challenges before Arlington schools.”
