The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis Looks at Proposed VA Budget Amendments to Be Voted on Later This Week

Bottom line: Senate Dems won some major victories, including deep-sixing Youngkin's "expensive tax cuts that would have mostly benefited corporations and the wealthy"

The great folks at The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis (TCI)  have been hard at work over Labor Day weekend (now that’s dedication!), releasing an analysis of the Virginia budget amendments that will be voted on by the Virginia General Assembly next week. Per TCI:

Since Saturday’s budget release, The Commonwealth Institute has updated our budget side-by-side comparison to include the conference committee budget proposal. We hope this will be a helpful resource for you. You can go directly to the pdf or access it on our website

A few highlights include:

  • Budget negotiators are proposing significant funding for support staff in our schools, investments in #mentalHealth, continuing a state program that will help to reduce #healthCare premiums, & more.” (Note: This is all good stuff, and overwhelmingly thanks to DEMOCRATS)
  • “But what’s not in a budget is just as important. Negotiators have not included expensive tax cuts that would have mostly benefited corporations and the wealthy.” (Note: THIS is a great example of why we need the Senate Democratic “blue wall,” to stop horrendously bad MAGA Republican ideas in a variety of areas, such as tax policy)
  • At the same time, #taxChoices that would have helped families hardest hit by rising costs (e.g. #EITC) were also left out of the budget and the one-time rebates will not reach all of these families.” (Note: THIS is a great example of why we need to elect a Democratic “trifecta” in 2025, starting with electing a Democratic House of Delegates and State Senate this November!)

With that, you can check out TCI’s detailed analysis of the budget amendment here. And, of course, thanks to TCI for putting this together so quickly, over Labor Day weekend no less!
