Who knows if Glenn Youngkin was always like this, but…yikes. I mean, what can you even say about someone who delivers lines like these without busting up into laughter (or blushing in embarrassment)? See below for video and a few “highlights” (plus my notes following each of these bizarre lines) from Youngkin’s speech at Trump’s inauguration today, as well as my notes on why what Youngkin said is – as former President George W. Bush once put it about Trump’s 2017 inaugural address – “some weird sh*t!”
- “This is the dawn of the golden age of America because we inaugurated the forty-seventh President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump.” (NOTE: 100% guarantee that we’re not entering a “golden age of America because we inaugurated…Trump.” More likely, this will be akin to the Robber Baronera, or maybe a new DARK age of America.)
- “My friend, we are standing here on the dawn of a new age, and we are seeing the sun set – the sun set on weakness, the sun set on wokeness, and the sun set on a wide open border that has turned every state into a border state.” (Of course, we haven’t had a “wide-open border,” far from it, no is “every state…a border state.” That’s just false. But this nonsense about the sun setting on “weakness” and “wokeness” is really bonkers – a sure sign that Youngkin has become like a far-right internet troll/radio host, or maybe is just pretending to be one for the MAGA base, because of course Youngkin has ambitions of succeeding Trump as president in 2028, and he’s going to do whatever it takes to make that dream come true for himself)
- “They tried to take him down legally. They tried to put him in jail. They tried to even assassinate him. And he never gave up on America, and America, we will never give up on him.” (This is wildly irresponsible rhetoric. In fact, “they” didn’t try to “take [Trump] down legally,” that was the RULE OF LAW attempting to hold Trump to account for his many crimes. As for some vague “they” trying to assassinate Trump, in fact the attempt in Pennsylvania, that one seems to have been by a deranged individual whose political beliefs and motives are unclear. As for the attempt in Florida, that guy also sounds nuts; he also “claimed to have voted for Trump in 2016 and later regretted it” and also supported Tulsi Gabbard at one point. But regardless, the main point is that this wasn’t some vague “they” who tried to assassinate Trump, it was two deranged individuals whose motives and political beliefs appear murky.)
- “He is bringing down inflation.” (Obviously, since Trump has only been president for a few hours, he’s not “bringing down inflation.” And if Trump carries through with his policies – tariffs, deportations, etc. – it’s much more likely that inflation will INCREASE under Trump, unless of course he crashes the economy into a deep recession or depression, in which case inflation will fall – but not for the reasons anyone would *want* it to fall.)
