ICYMI: Nonpartisan Analysis Proves GOP Budget Cuts Medicaid as Republicans Continue to Hide from Constituents

Last week, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) confirmed that the House Republican budget proposal would significantly cut Medicaid. These cuts could reverse the expansion of Medicaid for 630,000 Virginians and endanger coverage for a total of 1.8 million Virginians enrolled in the program. Despite the far-reaching impact of these cuts, Virginia’s Republican members of Congress—who all voted in favor of the Trump-endorsed budget—are refusing to hold in-person town halls, even as their constituents demand transparency and accountability.

“It’s been nearly two weeks since House Republicans passed their disastrous budget blueprint, and Virginians are left in limbo, fearing they’ll lose access to lifesaving health care,” said DPVA Communications Director Kelsey Carolan. “Virginians deserve answers, yet Republicans have chosen to hide from their constituents, refusing to engage and answer the tough questions about the harm their reckless cuts will cause. This is a betrayal of the people they were elected to serve.”

Here’s what Virginia Republicans have done since they passed the budget blueprint:

  • All five House Republicans stayed at the Ritz-Carlton in Miami for a weekend while their constituents stood outside their offices concerned about cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP.
  • Congressman Rob Wittman removed two offices—Midlothian and Williamsburg—from his list of mobile office hours after nearly 200 showed up at these offices to express their concerns about his support of cuts to critical programs and Donald Trump’s increasing threats to Virginia’s workforce.
  • Congresswoman Jen Kiggans posted multiple videos on social media applauding the House GOP budget and Trump’s cuts that hurt veterans while her constituents protested outside her office.
  • Congressman Ben Cline called the budget blueprint a “big, beautiful bill” while his constituents stood outside his office for two hours asking for a town hall meeting.
  • Congressman Morgan Griffith ignored the media when they asked why he hasn’t held a town hall meeting and won’t address his constituents’ concerns.
  • Congressman John McGuire praised Trump’s joint address that outlined his cuts as “common sense” and said “America is back.”
