Gov. Abigail Spanberger Endorses “Dopesick” and “Paper Girl” Author, Democrat Beth Macy, for Congress in VA06

Macy: "I've spent my career shedding light on the stories that folks in power didn't want to hear. Now, I'm bringing that fight to Congress."

Interesting endorsement by Gov. Abigail Spanberger – Beth Macy for Congress in VA06 – given that are three other Democrats running (Pete Barlow, Ken Mitchell, former Del. Wendy Gooditis), and also another potential Democrat (Del. Sam Rasoul) running. So clearly Spanberger must be thinking that Macy has the best shot of defeating the odious, worse-than-worthless, far-right Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA06) in November – with the district lines remaining very much an open question at this point, depending upon whether Virginia Democrats decide to shoot for a 10D-1R map (leaving only VA09 “safe” for Republicans) or a 9D-2R map (leaving VA06 and VA09 “safe” red). Anyway, congratulations to Beth Macy, who’s a very impressive person – I just finished reading her superb book, “Dopesick” and strongly recommend it.

P.S. On January 6, Macy announced that she’d raised over $600,000 in the four quarter of 2025 – that’s a lot, especially for a Democrat in VA06, which to date hasn’t been viewed as competitive. Also, see here for video of Macy talking about her books “Dopesick” and “Paper Girl,” as well as “how we had got to this moment where 20% of Americans are estranged from their families,” and “what happened to rural America, how we got so siloed in our news ecosystems and where can we go from here.”

P.P.S. Could this endorsement, just before new U.S. House maps for Virginia are unveiled, be an indication that Dems are leaning strongly towards 10D-1R?

GOVERNOR ABIGAIL SPANBERGER ENDORSES BETH MACY FOR CONGRESS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 27, 2026

ROANOKE, VA — Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger today announced her endorsement of Beth Macy in her run for Congress. Macy, the best-selling author of Dopesick, Factory Man, Paper Girl and other books, has chronicled the lives of under-represented people of rural Virginia for more than 35 years.

Beth Macy has spent four decades telling the stories of outsiders and underdogs — from reporting on offshoring jobs to shining a light on the devastating impacts of the opioid crisis,” Gov. Spanberger said. “As Republicans in Washington continue to make life more expensive for Virginia families, Beth is stepping up to lower costs and get things done for the people of Virginia. In Congress, Beth will do what she has always done: promoting opportunity, affordability, and dignity for working families. I’m proud to endorse her candidacy.”

Macy, who has also been endorsed by United States Senator Tim Kaine, launched her campaign in November, 2025, and reported raising over $600,000 in less than two months.

“I’m honored to receive Governor Spanberger’s endorsement and support,” Macy said. “In Congress, Abigail Spanberger was a leader who never backed down from a fight and always put her constituents first. As Governor, she’s already demonstrated that she’s set on delivering for Virginians. That ethos she so clearly embodies, of people over party and power, is what this campaign is about. I’ve spent my career shedding light on the stories that folks in power didn’t want to hear. Now, I’m bringing that fight to Congress.”

Beth Macy has spent her career holding truth to power. She grew up poor in a small Ohio town, became the first in her family to graduate from college, and built her adult life in Roanoke, Va., where she and her husband, Tom, raised their two children. For 25 years at The Roanoke Times, Beth covered the stories of people and communities across Western Virginia—listening without judgment and digging for the truth, even when it was uncomfortable.

Beth has spent her career highlighting how the system has devolved to benefit billionaires over working families. She has listened to, grieved with and advocated alongside parents who lost children to addiction, workers whose jobs disappeared, and communities forced to fight for basic services that include child care, healthcare and mental health treatment. She has watched families across the 6th District work harder than ever while falling further behind, as the people in power have become more beholden to corporations and the ultra-wealthy than to the communities that elected them. Now she’s running for Congress to make life affordable for working families, expand access to health care and ensure every child has a real chance at a better future.
