Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monnday (Martin Luther King. Jr. Day), January 18. Also, check out Hillary Clinton lsat night on the “systemic racism” in our criminal justice system, as well as the “disparities that stalk our country,” and the urgent need to address these serious problems.
- The 6 Best Moments of the Democratic Debate (I loved the last one in particular, as this has been wildly underreported: “Clinton calls attention to the crisis in Flint, Michigan.”)
- U.S. imposes new Iran sanctions for ballistic missile testing
- Clinton and Sanders sharpen their tone as the stakes rise (I thought that both Clinton and Sanders had strong debates, although as usual, Clinton is a superb debater and did the best; no idea why the DNC et al. limited the number of these things, as more debates would have helped the Democrats in general, and Clinton in particular.)
- Hillary Clinton Won Sunday Night’s Debate (“With a strong defense of President Obama, she got the better of Bernie Sanders.” Again, Hillary Clinton’s just really, really good at these things.)
- Paul Krugman: Health Reform Realities (“The question for progressives — a question that is now central to the Democratic primary — is whether these failings mean that they should re-litigate their own biggest political success in almost half a century, and try for something better. My answer, as you might guess, is that they shouldn’t, that they should seek incremental change on health care (Bring back the public option!) and focus their main efforts on other issues — that is, that Bernie Sanders is wrong about this and Hillary Clinton is right.”)

- Bernie Sanders Releases Outline of Universal Health Care Plan—And It’s Pretty Good (Although the question is, do we want to open up the debate on health care yet again, particularly given that it’s highly unlikely Democrats will control both Houses of Congress by comfortable margins after the November elections.)
