US Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) went out on a limb again this week. And he showed the kind of man he is (not good). Here’s what he said according to WRAL:
“Nothing made me feel any better than then I walked into a gun shop, I think yesterday in Oxford, and there was a copy of Rifleman on the counter. It’s got a picture of Hillary Clinton on the front of it. I was a little bit shocked that it didn’t have a bullseye on it,” Burr said in the recording. “But on the bottom right, it had everybody running for federal office in this particular state that they should vote for. So, let me assure you, there’s an army of support out there right now for our candidates.”

So, there he is “joking” about violence against the Democratic nominee for president. It is reminiscent of Trump’s “Second Amendment remedies.” And it’s downright dangerous to talk like this. Burr eventually realized he was in deep doo-doo. And he later said the statement was “inappropriate.”
There is some added context to this which needs airing. The NRA has blanketed the state of North Carolina with ads falsely claiming Hillary will “take away your guns.” There’s also an NRA ad which has aired hundreds of times with a purported crime victim falsely claiming Hillary doesn’t want her to be able to defend herself. These are damnable lies. We know it. The NRA knows it. But they do it anyway on behalf of the noxious, no-substance Burr. In this context, what Burr did was all the worse.
This man has done nothing for North Carolina or our our country, yet he has the gall to proclaim he would never vote to break cloture on any of Hillary’s nominees. He is a walking abuse of power. Meanwhile he has fanned hysteria, fear mongered, and spread falsehoods about Deborah Ross.
You should have seen his early ads trying to (figuratively speaking) get everyone to think there is a ISIS fighter under every bed. He even suggested Ross opposed legislation protecting women against violence (she supported such legislation) when it was HE voted against it. It’s enough to make a person sick. But such is the state of the GOP in North Carolina and the US Senate.
