I am Vice President of the United States of America. The president sets the policy. I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men marrying women are entitled to the same exact rights. All the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that. […] I think Will & Grace probably did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody has done so far. People fear that is different and now they’re beginning to understand.
Needless to say, I am very glad (although not surprised) to see this powerful statement from Vice President Joe Biden on marriage equality, especially when hateful anti-LGBT amendments are on the ballot in places like North Carolina, and when a majority of the American people now favor full marriage equality. Sadly, as always there are reactionary forces in this country who resist any progress, any advancements in social justice, for no good reason whatsoever. And, of course, most of those reactionary forces are now concentrated in one political party – one guess as to which one (hint: it’s not the Democratic Party). Anyway, thanks to Joe Biden for speaking up for GLBT Americans, and for all Americans who subscribe to the view that “all men are created equal.”
