U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin: “These Numbers Right Now Are Not Relevant”
This morning, as news broke that 46,885 Virginians filed last week for unemployment benefits, the United States Treasury Secretary told CNBC that he didn’t think the “numbers” were relevant.
His comments follow Washington Republicans’ last-ditch effort to cut unemployment insurance in coronavirus stimulus legislation.
House Democrats fought to ensure unemployed Americans receive aid in the most recent stimulus package. They also extended unemployment insurance and paid sick leave in previous coronavirus aid, despite the opposition of House Republicans.
“It’s disturbing to watch Washington Republicans fight against unemployment insurance and food security for children and dismiss millions of struggling Americans as ‘not relevant’”, said DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “The American people deserve to know if Congressman Riggleman will stand up for the millions of Americans who have been laid off or seen their hours cut through no fault of their own during this crisis.”
