So, at this point (6/5), in Virginia we’re at 48,532 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 5,008 hospitalizations and 1,453 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 676 (+1.4%) in the latest statistics, which is a slower rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 951 (+2.0%). The number of TOTAL test results was 405,858 (up 11,792 from 394,066 yesterday), while the number of “PCR Only” tests was 361,519 (up 10,165 from 351,354 yesterday). These testing numbers are above 10,000 per day (a number Gov. Northam has repeatedly stated as an important goal), but still lower than the 16,664 per day that Harvard’s Global Health Institute estimates we need to reopen safely and contain the virus. As for hospitalizations, they went up 51 (+1.0%), from 4,884 to 4,957, which is a slower rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 73 (+1.5%). Deaths are reported up 8 (from 1,445 to 1,453), compared to an increase of 17 (from 1,428 to 1,445) the previous day.
