The increase in deaths is far higher than any previous daily increase; what's going on here?

See below for graphics of the newly posted COVID-19 numbers by the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. So, at this point (9/15), in Virginia we’re at 135,514 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 10,337 hospitalizations and 2,839 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 943 (+0.7%) in the latest statistics, which is a slightly faster rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 757 (+0.6%). The number of TOTAL test results was 1,922,966 (up 12,719 from yesterday), which is still well below what we need, according to researchers at Harvard (that would be 22,422/day for mitigation, 81,741/day for suppression). As for hospitalizations, they went up 44 (+0.4%), which is the same rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 49 (+0.4%).  Deaths are reported +96, compared to +19 the previous day (NOTE: I’m not sure what to make of that massive spike in deaths, which if accurate would be by FAR the highest so far).
