See below for graphics of the newly posted COVID-19 numbers by the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. So, at this point (9/16), in Virginia we’re at 136,359 total reported – confirmed plus probable – cases (note that actual cases, as well as deaths, could be higher, maybe even a LOT higher, based on stories like this one in the NY Times), 10,389 hospitalizations and 2,884 deaths from COVID-19. The number of reported cases went up 845 (+0.6%) in the latest statistics, which is a slightly slower rate of increase than the day before, when reported cases were up 943 (+0.7%). The number of TOTAL test results was 1,937,867 (up 14,901 from yesterday), which is still well below what we need, according to researchers at Harvard (that would be 22,422/day for mitigation, 81,741/day for suppression). As for hospitalizations, they went up 52 (+0.5%), which is a slightly faster rate of increase than the day before, when hospitalizations were up 44 (+0.4%). Deaths are reported +45, compared to +96 the previous day (NOTE: VDH says, “Regarding the death data for Tuesday, September 15, 2020, there is an existing data backlog. VDH is working diligently to identify COVID-19 related deaths using vital record death certificate information.”).
